What do we make of plagiarism in historical martial arts texts? Does the idea even apply? And how can we tell who copied from what? This lecture will present case studies of copying by everyone from faithful students to sneaky thieves. We’ll talk about notable figures such as Palladini, Sutor, Alfieri, Schöffer, Schmidt, Giganti, Köppe, and Hynitzsch, in situations which range from murky grey areas to bald-faced stealing.
Attendees will get to judge for themselves: when does similarity become suspicious? When does copying veer into plagiarism? As we examine a series of controversial edge cases, we’ll explore the historical consequences of copying, from false narratives to hidden, unauthorized lineages.
