AI Translation for Historical Martial Artists

Instructor(s): Michael Heveran

Artificial intelligence is a powerful new tool for translating historical texts, yet it is a tool that must be used with caution. This interactive lecture will present a recent experiment with AI-assisted translation of Giuseppe Villardita’s work as a case study. We will explore best practices in transcription, editorial decisions, handling technical jargon, disclosures, and layout, emphasizing how practitioners can effectively augment AI translations with their expertise. Most importantly, we will learn how to avoid the most dangerous shortcuts that can tempt us when translating quickly.
