Frequently Asked Questions
When is VISS?
VISS runs every second year. VISS 2017 will be held on February 17-19, 2017.
How do I get there?
Along with the option of flying into Vancouver (YVR), VISS registrants who wish to save some travel cost can carpool together. We will be helping to facilitate carpools. If you’re interested in carpooling, please indicate so on your registration form.
Do I need a car?
Even if you are arriving in Vancouver through the Vancouver International Airport, our Skytrain transit system will take you directly downtown, only 2 blocks away from Academie Duello (or 3 blocks to the Victorian Hotel). Visit our detailed page on location and tourism.
What’s the difference between an “intensive track workshop” and just a workshop?
The ‘intensive track workshops’ are long courses split over the three days of the symposium. There are four intensive tracks (two running concurrently in the morning, and two in the afternoon). Essentially, they are a 9-hour course split into three 3-hour sessions. Jumping in and out of the intensive tracks is really not recommended, however this may be a feasible option for extremely advanced students. We also have stand-alone workshops for smaller topics which can be covered in a single 1-3 hour session.
What equipment do I need to bring?
Some workshops may provide weapons. Each workshop and instructor has a separate required list of gear. However, we do have a standard list of armour requirements on the VISS Sparring Equipment Requirements page.
Some workshops will provide weapons for students (list coming soon). All other workshops will not provide weapons. Protective equipment such as masks and gorgets will NOT be provided in any workshop. You must organise to rent these items, purchase them from us, or borrow them from a friend if you are not bringing your own.
