Matthew Howden runs HistoricCombat.com, where he heads the Visual Thibault and Visual Frias projects. Matthew has been researching, practicing, and teaching Historical European Martial Arts for most of three decades. During that time, he has been honored to present at such venues as the HEMA Alliance Open International Gathering, Swordsquatch, and the Vancouver International Swordplay Symposium. Matthew also teaches and fences in the Society for Creative Anachronism, where he has been awarded the Order of the Laurel, the groups highest award for historical research and recreation, and the Order of Defense, the groups highest award for steel-bladed combat. As an instructor, Matthew believes that fulfilling, life-long practice comes from inspiring and empowering students to take charge of their educational process and to challenge and push their instructors. When not holding a sword, Matthew enjoys tailoring, shoe making, woodworking, exploring languages, and practicing his career as a Business Intelligence Analyst and Process Developer.
