Mastering the German Longsword

Master Johannes Liechtenauer is the foundational figure for a 250-year tradition of fencing, originating in the late 14th century. The teachings for its signature weapon, the longsword, expose the principles that guide the whole of this system, Kunst des Fechtens (aka KDF), meaning “The Art of Fighting”.

In this 3-day workshop, we’ll draw a line directly from the source material – both Liechtenauer’s own and those of his disciples – through to execution of the art under pressure in sparring. Proper mechanics, understanding of tactics and strategy, plus a focus on comportment and control in bouting, will inform our study and praxis.

Venture to 15th century Germany and begin a path toward mastery with a weapon both elegant and deadly: the German Longsword.

Day 1 – Fundamentals: Striking, Thrusting, Binding, Measure, and Initiative

How to attack, how to defend, and how to employ Liechtenauer’s secret weapon: the Five Strokes.

Day 2 – Phases of the Fight: Entering, Engaging, Handwork, and Withdrawing

How to enter an exchange, what to do once you’re in, and how to get out safely.

Day 3 – Putting the Pieces Together

Combining the various actions of the previous two days into freeform exercises designed to bridge the gap between drills and sparring.
