Intensive Track Spotlight: Two-Handed Swords

Join us for a weekend-long symposium dedicated to the art of historical swordplay!
This year’s event offers three focused training tracks: Two-Handed Swords, Single-Handed Cutting Swords, and Dueling Swords, each designed to challenge and elevate your practice.
Attend one, or both, of these 9-hour intensives in the Two-Handed Swords track:
Matheus Alfred-Olmedo — The Ten Parts of Marozzo’s Spadone
Achille Marozzo crafted his assalti (or “assaults”) as solo forms meant to teach mechanics, tactics, and strategy to those attempting to wield these large weapons. This workshop will introduce participants to the ten parts of Marozzo’s “First Assalto of the Two-Handed Sword,” interpreting and applying the pedagogy and style of his book Opera Nova dell’Arte delle Armi (“New Works in the Art of Arms”). Participants will use the assalto as the workshop’s foundation and explore body mechanics and build tactical drills that utilize the weapon’s significant length and mass. A translation of Marozzo’s text will be available, so that the workshop’s interpretations and explorations are grounded in the words of the master himself.
Christian Tobler — Mastering the German Longsword
Master Johannes Liechtenauer is the foundational figure for a 250-year tradition of fencing originating in the late 14th century. The teachings for its signature weapon, the longsword, expose the principles that guide the whole of this system, Kunst des Fechtens (aka KDF), meaning “The Art of Fighting”.
In this 3-day workshop, we’ll draw a line from source material–Liechtenauer’s and his disciples–through to execution of the art under pressure during sparring. Proper mechanics, understanding of tactics and strategy, plus a focus on comportment and control in bouting will inform our study and praxis.
Venture to 15th-century Germany and begin a path toward mastery with a weapon both elegant and deadly: the German Longsword.
Will you take up the Sword in the Pursuit of Mastery?
