As students, we all develop beliefs that later turn out to be untrue. In this panel, we will explore the questionable assumptions and myths that persist in our martial arts. We will reflect on how we have outgrown our own bad ideas, and on the white lies we still tell as tools for teaching. Of course, we may be lying about them too.

Is Technique Enough? Traditional Culture in Non-Traditional Martial Arts

In historical martial arts, we often focus on reconstructing physical technique while setting aside traditional culture. But is that always the best choice? This panel will explore how tradition and ritual can both enrich and hinder our training, and what we do when a reconstructed martial art offers little cultural guidance.
